Gasoline Volatility

More subtly, gasolines differ in volatility, or the ease with which they ignite. The more volatile the gasoline, the more easily it vaporizes and ignites. For example, cold weather gasoline is more volatile (easily ignited) than warm weather gasoline simply to permit easier starting. It follows that hot weather gasoline is less volatile than cold weather gasoline to prevent excessive evaporation and vapor lock. Unlike octane rating, gasoline volatility is not advertised at the pump. However, some gasoline companies custom blend their gasoline for regional and seasonal weather differences, essentially selecting the right volatility level for your location. Some even add anti-icing compounds for use in very cold climates.
